PASSPORT CONTROL 4.
International Film, Photo and Music Workshop
November 9-15, 2007

Kars, Turkey

At the same time with our arrival back from the Siberian PASSPORT CONTROL 3, it turned out, we could realize PASSPORT CONTROL 4 in Kars, in the Eastern part of Turkey. The workshop will be a part of the „FESTIVAL OF EUROPEAN FILMS ON WHEELS” in collaboration with our Turkish colleagues. We introduced ourselves and the MEDIAWAVE successfully last year there with giving a tiny taste of our films, music, dance and food. A tour road movie was shot about it, which shows the Hungarian team in the festival and in the nearby places. You can watch different parts of the film on this page for getting a taste of our journey. The last part of it is our version, a Gipsy adaptation, of the KARS FESTIVAL’s signal music.

In fact this short film can be considered the first step of the workshop this year, since it was like a short summary of our experiments about Kars last year. Fanfara Complexa studied the music in moments, Kacsa (Gábor Deésy), a colleague of us with great sense of getting to know people, managed to find the scene: a smoky teahouse. Viol (Violetta Vajda) – the talented and restless onganizer of the last year’s and this year’s journey, too – convinced Tuncel Kurtiz, who was present at the festival to play a role in the film. (Tuncel is as popular actor in Turkey, as Iván Darvas was in Hungary.) The citizens had had no idea about the shooting, but they adapted to it quickly as we started to shoot. Our version of their festival signal, the music band and of course the Hungarian food were a huge success at the closing ceremony of the festival, and meanwhile it also gave the first bases to plan a workshop there this year.

In spite of the soon coming deadline, we have received a lot of exciting applications.

From the filmmakers: we expected synopsis of short fiction/experimental/documentary films, which can be realized in a world totally unknown for them.

From the photographers we expected plans how, from which point of view they would try to catch visually the local scenes, people, atmosphere… The applicants had some help: not only the film mentioned formerly, but some materials about the place found by Péter Szabó, the photography teacher of the first three workshops.

Ferenc Török, a significant character of the new Hungarian filmdirector generation, became the leader of the Film Workshop. His role is to help the young filmmakers to make their films as successful as they can. In addition he also would like to shoot a film with a S8 camera, because, as he told us, he was born in the generation of the video, thus the workshop will probably be a great chance to learn something about the filming techniques of the former generations.

What I want from this workshop... is to experience new country and new culture, try to make street photography and to share my thoughts and feelings with other people from the workshop. And it is very important because when you travel alone you are not sharing with others and workshop is a very nice opportunity to share thoughts and what you did.
