20:00 CONCERT - ABDELJALIL KODSSI & WLAD MLOUK LAHWA (MOROCCO)
www.myspace.com/abdeljalilkodssi
Gnawa music was born as a mixture of African, Arabic and Berber spiritual songs and rhythms. It was spred throughout Africa and Europe as a tradition of Gnawa tribe living mainly in Morocco and Algeria.

Their music comes together with trance during their several hours long seances, where music becomes an expression of prayer and joy of life at the same time, which is often accompanied by dance. It also serves as a healing ceremony.

In Morocco members of Gnawa society – whose origin can be found in the countries of Black Africa -, were mainly slaves and their descendants. Gnawas were deported as slaves from their home land, West-Sudan (Mali, Guinea, Ghána) to Meknes and its region during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672-1727), then to Essaouira under the era of Moulay Abdellah (1757-1790).
Gnawas combine music and healing during their ritual, night trance ceremonies (Lila). In these ritual seances men and women lurched in trance in the accompanionship of rhytmhmical music of drums, tinklers and guitars with three strings, and lyrics which come from holy Islamic texts and from African folk poems.

"The only thing I can say is that when finally I „sobered up” at 6am, I wasn’t tired at all." (comment of a European musician…)

WLAD MLOUK LAHWA, Moroccan band is led by Abdeljalil Kodssi, who was discovered in a barber shop by Juan Goytisolo, a famous Spanish writer. Besides his work he played a lot in Marakesh, and soon he was invited to Spain and France, too. He managed to spread his people’s music to several countries. The strangest co-operation was established between him and Don Cherry, famous American trumpet-player, who insisted on working with him until his death, 1995.

23:00 GNAWA TRANCE PARTY - PASSPORT CONTROL performance
Among the trees in Ravazd, strange things happen when the night falls. Here and there wildfire flares up, unearthly noises break up from the silence, weird citizens of the forest wander around. It is the pulsating rhythm of the drums, the flaming dance, the spiritual music, which lure strange creatures of the forest in Bakonyalja out of their shelters, who show their real selves this time…
